The Devil's Eye © Robert Haraldsen

When I met the Devil, it was on his level.
He said he was a friend of mine.
He took me to a houri. "Don't you worry -
she will make you feel just fine!"

He said, "Look me in the eye, you know I tell no lie."
And I looked but all I saw was my reflection

"To live is not as necessary as to navigate," he said.
"You must leave this surface for a better fate.
Choose between this compass and these ivory dice,
but remember that the straits are dire from here to paradise."

I laughed and took the Compass, said "I'm heading for the skies".
He said, "First then learn to navigate", and threw the magic dice.
Incinerating flames blazing from his eyes.
I fell into purgation through the furnace of my lies.

Then in my last ditch I fell upon this witch.
She said that she would love me 'til I die.
Said, "This is resurrection", as I gave her my affection.
Then she did me like a spider does a fly.

She said look me in the eye...........

Then I saw her rolling eyes were aces of the dice.
In her darkened room unfolding her disguise
I fell into a hole she said was Paradise.
But deep inside were only snakes and carcasses and mice.

When I looked back home, the Devil was alone
tangled with my woman in my bed.
She said he did it well - now I was expelled.
Then I knew for sure that I was dead.

She said, "Look me in the eye - you know I tell no lie".
And I looked but all I saw was his reflection.
I left my world in ashes forever far behind.
'Tween everything and nothing I could only find -
the Devil was a part of me - still I was divine.
Growing through eternity creation was my mind.

When I met the Devil it was on my level.
I said, "Look me in the eye - you know I tell no lie".
And he looked but all he saw was his reflection.
Reflection.
We look, but all we see – reflections

Dedicated to Cecilie - of the sky

"The Devil's Eye" was completed by inspiration of my friend Axel Jensen.
He would request this song on different occasions. He said "Sing that song about me".
Although it was not about him it might as well have been - just as it may be about anyone who has experienced anything close to Dante's Inferno.

(The son "A Word" is dedicated to Axel Jensen.)

The Warrior © Robert Haraldsen

I burned down all my candle for the schemes
bleeding through the darkness to our dreams
Danced the fires like a martyr
for every sceen we tore apart
forgetting all regret along the road - the lonely road

Threatened by the verdict of disgrace
brought before this lover's open case
to the court for false repentance
Sentenced never more to enter
any dream or body to revive - my broken pride

/.We're a little bit older now
got a load off our shoulders now
Need your love to say goodbye ./

You cast me off your ship for duty failed
like Jonah carried off inside a whale
spat up on these rocks restored
now hand me down my silver sword
and don't forget the laurel leaves - if you please

/.We're a little bit older now
got a load off our shoulders now
Need your love to say goodbye ./

We can be the part of something old
we can be the part of something new
You must know which way you're going
Do you feel your mind is growing
Do we know the secrets to reveal - or to conceal

We're a little bit older now
got a load off our shoulders now
Need to love to say goodbye
We're a little bit older now
Need your love to say goodbye

…goodbye…

To my son Frederik - of peace

Follow The Dawn © Robert Haraldsen

Listen to the world spinning around
listen to the moon humming along
call on the dawn - then follow them down
There must be an answer but why is it so hard to get
I turned to the sun - the sun said "don't you forget"
I am the dawn- now follow me down
beyond the light and delight and the gallows the shadows of goals
I'll touch your eyes and you'll see my body unfold
one time dust - next time gold- your story untold

Listen to the old buglers call
listen to the sound hewing the walls
crumbling down - follow them down
clarion blower where are you going tonight
down to the river - to tell him you told he's right
don't let him drown - don't let him down
the river will flow but nobody knows where it ends
and Orpheus crying, he's dying for making amends
one time up - next time down - no limit´s no bound

Listen to the wars rumbling on
listen to the whores tumbling around
follow them down - follow them down
where is the liar and where is the lover so true
she's been without him before but this time it's new
left in her gown - follow it down
it's easy to see that the future is coming too soon
for a sleepy-eyed bride that doesn't awake until noon
one day champagne next day it's drought - what's it about

llisten to the world spinning around
llisten to the old buglers call
listen to the wars rumbling on
listen to the moon humming along
follow the dawn, follow me down

Blue Planet (Suicidal Blue) © Robert Haraldsen

We tried hard to settle down
and we tried not to worry 'bout our souls
'bout the stars in the sky
and why they are there

A face in a cold neon light
told me that God lost the fight
We are dying of thirst
will the sky ever burst with rain

Cold winds are blowing
sky's turning gray
suicidal planet
swirling away

We fight 'til our bodies are dead
can we build up a new world instead
won't you help us, oh Lord
is there any reward for the pain

Oh, winds are blowing
clouds turn away
blue, blue planet
swirling astray

Butterfly (Universal Mind) © Robert Haraldsen

Look here through my window
the sun is rising
from the ever same horizon
like so many times before

My weary mind is wandering
won't come together
changing weather
the difference I see

As the sun brings in the morning
on wings passing low
just to say hello - I tell myself

Butterfly, I wonder why you came by
to keep me company
What do you know, could it be so
that you go through
a better world than mine
- what will we find…
'Souls are forever in the universal mind'

Another month and day
I see a tree with flowers
growing hours - passing by
and as the sun brings in the morning
on wings passing low
just to say hello - I tell myself

Butterfly, I know why you came by
to keep me company…
Oh, I know
it could be so
that we go through a better world each time
what will we find…
'Souls are forever in the universal mind'

To my daughter Elin - of the light.

The Stranger © Robert Haraldsen

Why - don't you think you will cry
'cause the sun's rolling high
when the mountains are sand
you'll need a helping hand

Where's there an understanding for prayers dear
don't you know that your tears dear
disappear in the rain
while the pain still remains

./. Now you're on your way
summer warms the soul
of a stranger who was left a winters day ./.

• •

Hold it, don't you know that I told you
everytime that you sold it
you say you don't change
you're falling out of my range

Ask me and I'll tear off your mask
'cause you know that's my task
I know where you've been
You're going, you're going again

./. Now you're on your way
summer warms the soul
of a stranger who was left a winter day
./.

Mary Volcano © Robert Haraldsen

Did you ever meet Mary Volcano
she'll drive your mind insane - oh
did you ever meet Mary Volcano

Mary is a pretty girl I met last fall
I never thought she'd do me much harm at all
did you ever meet Mary Volcano

I heard her one day she was lying
her love had been gradually dying
I broke down shaking and crying

Mary is a pretty girl I need her more
more than love i ever needed before
did you ever meet Mary Volcano

The Owl (Edges of Belief) © Robert Haraldsen

Starlight seeking havens through endless space for peace
Silhouettes are sharpened on the edges of belief
Thunderstorms are crying as they vanish in the rain
Growing hearts are calling through the wilderness in vain
(Light passes slowly from your eyes into your brain)

Moving forces seize you — you're standing in their way
Follow the directions, listen to what they say
Then moving all together you'll want to be alone
Flying faster, look back you have grown
(Light passes quickly when your mind becomes your own)

Confidence growing like mountains from the earth
Echoing a laughter, the sound that gives you birth
And when forrests are no longer just the silhouettes of trees
Flying through your lifetime - feel the summer breeze
(Then morning comes to meet you as you shut your eyes in peace

A Word © Robert Haraldsen

My left hand is a paper
my right hand is a pen
I'm stuck inside a puzzle
reaching out to touch the end
where the deafening silence blinds me
and makes the mind surrender

I wander through the brilliance
t'ween a paper and a pen
got a message from the right side
information from a friend
the word's a wakening vision
and it takes the time I spend

The word that's forming faintly
grows stronger and I find
a line cuts through the sunshine
it's bent through space and time
as life is born and faded
the circle shapes my mind

See it moving closer
on the scene of sleeping arts
and the audience is praying
to the dealer of the parts
then someone gets the message
leading to their hearts

My left hand is a paper
my right hand is a pen
my reader is the future
and the past a distant friend
I'm moving through the present
to the writer at the end

Somebody (Catcher In The Rye) © Robert Haraldsen

Somebody wants a minute
Somebody wants an hour
Somebody wants a moment
for just a little power

Somebody writes a letter
Somebody writes a card
Somebody writes a poem
and puts it in a jar

Keeping it for sacred
or casting it to sea
Singing from a scaffold
With thorns and bended knees

Don't speak to me 'bout sorrow
Don't ask me to explain
Just wait until tomorrow
And see what will remain

Where are you my children
where are you tonight
I am lonely for you
you're always out to fight

Somebody's got to follow
Somebody's got to lead
Somebody's cries in hunger
Somebody's got the greed

Somebody's got the forrest
Somebody's got the streets
Somebody's got the roses
Somebody's got disease

Oh, Hey my little baby...

Loving for tomorrow
living for to die
Holy man of nature
or catcher in the rye

The Sea © Robert Haraldsen

Oh the sea, it is she
who rests on the deepest graves
And the sea was there
long before you could hear
the roar of her tides
on the cliffs
where the seagulls hide

See the swan upon
a lake and the air is clear
and the swan is proud
like a white summer cloud
on a light cool breeze
swaying reed
where the ripples cease

And the man he stands
alone in a burning fire
while the fading suns
wait behind 'til the guns of the blind
turn to dust
while the sea
cools the shaking crust

Oh the sea.......

I Go There © Robert Haraldsen

Will life soon start to run
Smooth and even fun
I lift my head up to the stars
Speaking gentle words to Mars
And I - go - -
Yes I go there

You seek and then you find
The corners of your mind
And if you seek - you go there
If you see -then you go there
I go there - yes I go there

We were born by the hopelessly sane
Blessed by the beauty of chains
Baptized in a bowl of fresh acid rain
Welcomed to join in the strain
(Ah, you know it, ah)
Back here in your arms
(I want to know if his baby's born Sun - yeah - baby)
I was trying to wake up - I was trying to sleep
Praying to the Saints to give me(...my woman) a sip from the Golden Cup
(...fool around...)

When life begins to run
Smooth and even fun
I lift my head up to the stars
Speaking gentle words to Mars
And I - go - -

(...in your arms - got me in your arms)

Oh well, I looked up the wall and the clock stood still
And I said u.. baby you just gave me a chill....
come on - come on

It'll be so free - you're gonna be so free

I ran down that river...

Liv © Robert Haraldsen

English translation (note the Scandinavian girls name "Liv" means "Life"

Life (for my children) © Robert Haraldsen

In a strange reality you're sitting close to me
lifting last years fallen leaves
inspecting what we see
an ant, an earwig, a snail - and gee
see that hopping sparrow over by the tree!
Poking round for breakfast all hidden in the sand
Oh - look - a tiny spider creeping on your hand

It is life, It is Life, everywhwere there is life
everything you see - is life...
-
A small piece we have today of eternity
Oh, how strange to think that I am me
wondering how the snail sees the ant on its way
and that spry little sparrow -
I think that it would say:
My Mother is the Earth and my Father is the Sky
and the way we put our questions - is how we get reply

It is life, it is life ...

Vetenskapsman - profane profet
Tala till mig, säg vad du vet
Vad har du lärt dig av kunskapens frukt
ge mig lite vatten och luft

Nonylfenoxypolyetoxyetanol
flyter ner mot Nekropol
en stilla flod av utplånad passion
emanciperad
socialstandardiserad
desinficerad
– sensation

Heta ådror pulsar Moder Jord
– andas skogen vinden, Livets röst
ropar till oss från en annan strand:
"Kom till oss, ta livet i land"
